Using a Windows mailer

Why do I have to use a character based mail reader I can't read all these attachments that people send me.

The simple answer is you don't.

Even without taking Microsoft Windows into the equation you have two fully graphical mail readers included with your system. You also have at least three character based readers - two of which can read attachments.

The comments, Ohh Unix mail is crap, I can't work this, It's too complicated - no sorry these comments are based on pure ignorance.

At least using ANY of the supplied (and the other half a dozen other readers out there for unix) you would have been completely immune to the 'I LOVE You' or 'mellissa' or whatever the 'virus of the week' is virus.

So after all that you still want to run a Windows Mailer.

(But don't send large attachments - learn to use the other net resources, anyway our servers will block them if too big!!!)

Click the Icon on your desktop 'Microsoft Outlook'

  • Click Tools -> Services

  • Select Add -> Internet Mail

You will get a box with four 'tabs'

  • General Enter name for this service - e.g. Mail on the Unix Box
Fill in the Name/Organisation as required
Enter your mail address this is user@machine.bdsl.com

Note - looking at the number of failed messages we get, many of you do not know your mail address.

Taking my mail address tom@xanth.bdsl.com it is in three parts:

tom tom My Unix Login Name
tom@xanth xanth The name of my Unix Machine
tom@xanth.bdsl.com bdsl.com The domain you belong to.

If you are not sure ASK. - You will need to know the name of your Unix box if you want to continue with this guide.
