Checking your Edge Root/Boot floppy

Applies to: BackupEDGE Version 01.01.xx

The root/boot floppy set is very important when it comes to recovering the system after a crash. A set of Root/Boot floppies whenever any changes are made to the system that affect the hardware. Additionally, it is a good idea to re-generate the floppies at least 2/3 times a year.

Once a new set has been generated you should verify that the disks work and the last master backup tape is readable. The verification procedure is very straight forward and is very similar to the procedure used in the event of a disk restore.

This procedure will take about 20 minutes and should be carried out when no-one needs access to the system.

Log in as root (or admin) and shutdown the system. e.g.

shutdown -g0 -y

At the 'Safe to Power Off' point, insert the Edge disk labeled 'Boot' and press the RESET switch (or power off/on). The system will now startup using the information on the floppy disk. You should insert the Edge filesystem disk when prompted for. After a minute or so the RecoverEDGE (floppy) menu will appear.

You should insert the last master backup tape and select the option 'Test Tape' from the menu. Accept the defaults for the tape name and size.

At this point the data on the tape will be verified, assuming all goes OK you will be returned to the menu where you can select the Quit option. When the screen says 'Power Down' you should remove the floppy disk and tape from the machine. Either press the RESET switch or Power the system off and on.
