Creating a Root/Boot Floppy set with Edge

Applies to: BackupEDGE Version 01.01.07 and higher

The root/boot floppy set is very important when it comes to recovering the system after a crash. Loading Unix on to a disk after a failure can take up to 6 hours. With a root/boot floppy this is reduced to about 30 mins (plus tape restore time).

You should generate a set of Root/Boot floppies whenever any changes are made to the system that affect the hardware: e.g.

Additionally, it is a good idea to re-generate the floppies at least 2/3 times a year.

The procedure for generating them is very straight forward:

When the recoverEDGE menu appears (note the menu bar is at the top of the screen) you should pick the option 'Generate'. The system will prompt you to insert floppy disks as needed ( three of them ). The system will automatically generate the required floppies without any other questions being asked.

Once the disks have been generated you will be returned to the RecoverEDGE menu. You should then select the 'Report' -> 'Print' option and printout a report to the printer. This printout should be kept in a safe location along with the root/boot floppies.

To check the disk(s) you should see the related document:
