Common Questions about Hardware
Many problems that occur within the system can be identified and sometimes fixed by following a few procedures. It is very helpful to Support if you can provide certain information when you call the Hotline.
In all cases of hardware problems, it is worth checking whether the power supply is connected, have any fuses blown, cables come loose etc.

MY STAR LABEL PRINTER WON'T PRINT ANY THING.
MY STAR LABEL PRINTER ONLY PRINTS pd
- Switch the printer off and on again.
- Switch the printer off, hold the two small keys on the top down,
keep them held down while you switch the printer back on again.
- Cancel all jobs waiting for this printer
See guide to cancelling printers.
- Retry printing a label, if it still does not print, cold boot your
machine and try again.
- Does it print a test print ? Switch off, hold the LF button down and switch on.
- Switch the printer off and on again.

MY SCREEN IS STUCK !
- There should be a power cable - is it in place ? does the screen
have power? has the plug been switched off, or the fuse gone ?
- There is also a data cable, is it plugged in at the screen end ? and
the CPU / or wallbox end ? Which socket is it plugged into?
- Switch the screen off/ on again.
- Kill the process for this tty number (See guide to killing hung
screens)
- If still hung, check that the cables are all in the correct places
and, if they are, reboot your system to reset the device file.
Before you call Support, have a note of which tty number the screen is, which port the data cable is into, are there any printers/cash drawers etc attached DIRECTLY to it, is there a number on the wall box that the data cable goes into?
If you have two screens the same (eg: 2 Wyses) then try swapping the working screen with the non-working screen.
- Does the non working screen work in different place ?
- Does the working screen STOP working in the problem place?
- There are at least 3 variables with a non working screen
- the port
- the screen
- the cable
We need to narrow the problem down to the faulty one ! Checking all of the above will help us to do so.

MY SCREEN IS BLANK
- Is it plugged in..and switched on ? Silly question perhaps but it does
happen.
- If it is powered on, is there a power light on the monitor ?
If not, check the fuse, plug and socket. Are they all OK ?
- If there is a light, check the contrast / brightness settings. If I had
a pound for every "broken " screen, that had the contrast setting
turned down simply by someone running a duster over it, I would be very
rich !
If all these check out, try swapping the screen as described above, try rebooting the machine.

I'VE DONE A SHUTDOWN AND THE MACHINE SAYS DISK ERROR OR NONSYSTEM DISK
- Do you have a floppy disk in the drive ? If so take it out and try rebooting the machine again.
