Creating Laboratory Files

To create laboratory files use the following procedure:

  1. {Classic Menu} - Select Reports or
    {New Style} - Select Misc Utilities

  2. Laboratory Reports

  3. Edit normal ranges - Select the species you wish the tests to relate to and answer Yes to the 'Continue Y/N' question.

  4. The prompt line Add Change Quit appears - select Add and enter.

  5. It will ask for a description, type in the name of the test; eg: RBC

  6. It then asks for normal units, g/l, mmol/l etc. Enter as applicable.

  7. Adult lower range - enter the figure given in your labs normal values Adult upper range - again, enter the reference value given by the lab

  8. The whole line will now appear on your screen with the Add Change Quit prompt line below.

  9. Repeat the process from step 4 until all your required tests are in with the correct units and upper/lower reference values

NB: IF YOU USE MORE THAN ONE LABORATORY FOR RESULTS AND YOUR OWN IN HOUSE TESTS OR A COMBINATION OF THESE, THEN BE AWARE THAT THEY MAY HAVE SLIGHTLY DIFFERING REFERENCE VALUES AND YOU WILL NEED TO ENTER EACH ONE AS A SEPARATE TEST

    e.g.
    RBC (QBC) 3.4 23
    RBC ( Bloxham ) 4.8 24
    RBC ( Vetlab ) 3.9 22

This is especially important for when you set up the profiles for particular labs.

  10. Once you are satisfied that you have entered ALL the tests that you are likely to need you can Quit back to the menu, select Display/print ranges and choose the species you want to print out.

  11. Answer Yes to continue and Yes to printing question. This will produce a printed list of all the tests you have entered with units, lower and upper ranges, you can now double check your entries before going on to set up the profiles.

SETTING UP PROFILES.

As most lab machines and labs give their results in the same order everytime, it can save a lot of time if you set up profiles in the report section that enables you to enter the results onto the computer in the same order.

  1. From the laboratory reports menu, select Set up Profile.

  2. It will ask you which profile to set up, Start at No.1!!

  3. Enter the description (incl detail such as lab name) eg: Haem Blox

  4. Now add the tests in the order you want them - use the printed list of ranges to get the correct test number. Entry to change = 1 then Test No. = 1 (or correct no.), continue until all the tests for this profile are added.

USING LABORATORY REPORTS - Tests and profiles.

  1. Go into a clients management record and instead of pressing C for clin. press 1.

  2. This will take you into that clients lab record, you now have a prompt line that allows you to Add records, select this and the next prompt line asks you what you wish to add.

Notes: allows freehand text to be entered in the same way as a text box on a clinical record
Profile: allows you to choose a particular range of tests
Bact: allows you to add data and results from swab type tests.
Test: allows a single test result at a time.
Ref: allows you to enter a lab reference.

  3. If you select test it will ask you for the test carried out, enter the test in the same way you put it into the normal ranges. eg. RBC - it will then prompt you for the result and after you have entered the info, it chks that it is correct.

  4. Select profile and it will give you a list of all the profiles that you have set up.
    1. Choose the profile that relates to the results you wish to enter
    2. The tests appear on the screen and you just add the result against the matching test name.
    3. If there is no result then either the return key or the down arrow will move you onto the next test.
    4. When all the results are entered you can press Esc and the results will be shown on the screen with the date and reference values.
