Guide to getting out of vi.
Vi is a text editor supplied with all Unix systems and within the PremVet5 software there are some options that will call this editor.
The purpose of this guide is to tell you the easy way of getting out when you are stuck in vi.
How to tell if you are in vi.
You may have signs like these down the side of your screen -
~ ~ ~
You may have "no subject" written at the top of the screen.
OR
You may have "bad command" or "not an editor command" at the bottom of your screen.
OR
The keys that you press will make a beeping noise back at you.
To exit Vi
Press ESCape (usually top left of the keyboard), nothing obvious will happen. It may beep at you!!
(Doing this ensures that you are in "Command" mode.)
Then type a colon : (It should appear at the bottom left hand corner of your screen.)
The type "x". This has to be a lower case "x". (This should appear next to the colon.)
Then press return.
You should now be at either # or $ or a quit option.
