Admin Account
An administrative account called 'admin' has been added that allows you to carry out some of the common tasks on the system. This account is almost as powerful as root so access to it should be restricted to responsible staff.
To access the administrative menu you should login as 'admin' the initial password as been set to 'admin' and it is recommended this is changed as soon as possible.
This guide will cover all the options that are available. When using the Admin menus <tab> will allow you to jump between the options and the option at the bottom of the box.
The initial menu contains the following options:
Create Recovery Disks
-
This will start up the Edge 're2' menu to allow you to generate
recovery disks for your system. Full details are contained in the
Microlite BackupEdge manual. There are also some FAQ's in 'Support Documents and FAQ' section of the on-line
help.
Backup menu
-
Will access the BackupEdge menu to allow manual
backups, backup schedules, backup status etc. See the Edge manual
for details.
Cross Updating Menu
-
Access to 'xmenu' the cross
updating menu - details are available via the on-line help.
Shutdown the system
-
Will shutdown the system. You will be asked for confirmation.
Administration Menu
-
Common Administration task - will be explained in detail below.
Enserve Control menu
-
If you have the EnServe
module installed this menu allows you to alter the configuration
and will be explained later in this document and via the
'Enserve' section of the on-line help.

Administrative Menu
This menu contains the common tasks:
Kill a user or Terminal
-
If you need to kill a user or reset a hung screen you can do so with
this option. When selected you will get a list of all the users on
system. Press Return to continue and you will be asked to enter either
the name of user to kill OR the tty number.
The system will display what it is about to do and give you the option to abort by pressing the <DEL>ete key.
Add a user to the System
-
As the option suggests, this will add a user to both Unix and
(optionally) Premvet.
You will be asked for the login name (8 characters max) and if the user already exists you will be warned.
Login name :
Once a login name is set it cannot be changed without removing the person completely.
You will then be asked for the users full name e.g. Login name may be tom and full name T.W. Melvin. When the user 1st logs in they will be asked to set their Unix password (can be changed later from within Premvet).
Full name :
You will then be asked if you want them added to Premvet, answer accordingly. You will be prompted for the Premvet 3 character ID. They will be added under premvet group 1 and take whatever access permissions you have allocated to that group.
In addition, a Windows home directory will be created ($HOME/smbhome) and a personal web folder created ($HOME/public_html) with the appropriate Unix access permissions applied. If you have Samba installed the user will have a blank SMB password allocated and can be changed on the user setup screen from within Premvet.
Reset the Modem
-
If the modem appears hung this option will reset the modem. If there is
a user currently using it you will have the option to kill them.
-
If a user has forgotten their Unix password this option can be used to
reset it and they will be asked for a new password the next time they
login. This option should also be used to reset the 'admin' account
periodically.
- If you are connected to the net you can tell the system to synchronise with a known time server
- Manually enter the correct data and time.
You will be presented with a list of all users e.g.:
Select the user and their password will be reset e.g.:
When they next login they will be prompted for a new password.
Edit System Files
-
There are some system files you may wish to make changes to and the
common ones can be changed via this option. Please note the editor used
WILL BE the system editor 'vi' - this is intentional as there are times
where you require the functionality of vi to ensure the changes are
made correctly. There are guides to using 'vi' in the FAQ section of
the on-line help.
Some of the options relate to EnServe and may do nothing on your system.
The files you can alter are:
| Aliases | Controls what Mail Aliases are in use. |
|---|---|
| Scanner | What folders are automatically Virus Scanned. |
| Hosts | IP address to name mapping file. All network devices should be listed in this file. |
| Mutt | Mailer Setup and Configuration |
| Resolv | What Nameservers you are using. It is not necessary to edit this file normally. |
| BlackList | List of mail addresses that are Blocked. |
| Premvet | The start-up file used by Premvet. Controls what global options should be applied. You can also set Lab E-Mail settings. |
| Crontab | Cron is the schedular that controls what tasks run when. ***Need URL HERE***** |
View System Log files
-
As the option suggests, this lets you look at some of the log files
used by the system. These include Web access, FTP usage, Syslog, who
has logged on recently, the current processes and network usage.
-
IPF - this is the firewall used when Enserve is in-use. This
option will scan the current firewall log files, split out each 'service'
and then run a detailed report on it. As it is a detailed report it can
take a little while to run (depends on the size of the log file).
Once the system has split up the log you will be asked to enter the specific serve to look at:
(Use the <Tab> Key and the <SpaceBar> to select)
Here we have selected the pop3 log
Then the report will be displayed (use PageUp/Down and Arrow Keys to navigate).
View Premvet Logfiles
-
Similar to the System log viewer above except it looks at the log files
maintained by Premvet. These include Diary cancellations, when animals
were added, User activity, Vatbook resets, edits made to the clinical
file and who is currently using Premvet.
| Added | Dates/Times when animals were added. |
|---|---|
| Diary | Diary Cancellations |
| User | If user logging on this will show all activity. |
| UUCP | Last Cross Updating Integration information |
| Vatbook | Vatbook resets |
| Edit | Clinical edits - Dates and times and who |
| Who | List the current Premvet users. |
Show Password/Login Status
-
Access to the system statistics dealing with Terminal activity, login
times and password expiry times. These reports are discussed fully in
the Unix on-line help.
Set the System Time
-
If your system clock goes adrift it can be reset in one of two ways:
Select as required - remember to avoid using the manual option when there are active users on the system.
Remove Premvet Locks
-
There are some files created to ensure that only one person can carry
out a specific task (lock files). Normally the system will remove the
lock as soon as the task is finished. If there is a rogue process,
modem line droped un expectedly, system problem etc. the lock can be
left on thus not allowing other users access. This option will remove
them. There is NO check as to whether it is valid or not - it will be
simply removed.
Scan for Viruses
-
You do need a virus scanner installed for this option to do anything.
You have the choice of what to scan - selcted with the <SpaceBar>
More details are in the EnServe Documentation

EnServe Control menu
If you have the EnServe module installed this option allows access to some of the EnServe specific options. It currently has:

-
Which sites can/cannot access the server
JunkBuster
-
Privicy Control and Ad blocker.
Squid Proxy Server
-
The Web Proxy server, you can add ACL's here to restrict times and
which PC's can access the web. See the EnServe FAQ on
restricting access.
IP Filters

A second lever of security that can restrict access based on the
service they are trying to use.

E-Mail filter rules to mark
mail as containing Spam.

If you are using McAfee as a virus scanner this option will update your
definition files on-line.
Mail Settings
-
The configuration for Exim (MTA).
Samba Configuration
-
The configuration for the SMB server in use.

Lookup a name/IP
-
This utility is handy to see who an address or domain belongs to in real-life. Often, you will see a 'site' attempting to access your system - who is it? who do you complain to?
You will be prompted for 'Who To Find' - enter what information you have. You may need to run the option a few times, once to translate the IP number to an address - then enter the address to locate the domain and then try the domain.
Not all IP Numbers will resolve to addresses!!
Here we have entered Vetsolutions.co.uk and it gives who we are:
