Supported Terminal Emulators
Terminal emulators are pieces of software to allow PC's to access your Premvet server. Over the years we have added support for a wide range of Emulators. Many have been adopted widely by sites but now we are concentrating on just three.
With OS updates to Microsoft Windows and Apple Mac this FAQ will outline the supported versions.
Microsoft Windows
With windows there are two main emulators used Anita and PuTTY.
Anita is a commercial emulator (you have to buy it) produced by April System ( www.april.se) - this is very popular and Premvet does make use of many features. The main feature allows you to make use of your Premvet data in Windows applications.
Putty is a free emulator, (download from: greenend.org.uk) great for quick access and is also needed in some circumstances to establish secure links to your site if VPN's are not available. The main drawback is you do not have any link to Windows applications.
- Anita 7 Ver 7.5.2.0 - does work ok with XP however when trying to install on Windows 7 it will fail we suggest you upgrade to Anita 8
Anita 7 NOT Supported with Win 7
- Anita 8 Ver 8.8.1.1 - works well with Windows 7 - we have been running it in-house for 6 months and behaves well.
- Anita 9 There is a new version available, the web site does mention some nice options, however at this point in time we do not take advantage of them. We will review this version in more detail at some point in the future.
- Putty Works with all versions of Windows.
Version 0.60 (2007 release) is still the current production release.
A beta version (0.61) as been released in July 2011 will give it a few more months to stabilise before adopting it.
Apple Mac OS
Janita
We support Janita with Snow Leopard and the newer Lion.
Janita does need 'Java run-time' which is no longer shipped with OS, however, when installing it will download appropriate files if connected to Net.
Once installed you do need to make one change - getting the Escape key to work. Premvet as you know uses it a lot to exit boxes prompts etc. you should make sure the changes below are done before using it.
- Run the janitaconfig utility
- Select Keyboard Mapping -> Map New Key -> Press ESC key, then enter <esc> for description
- Save
To double check it's worked (or to make the changes manually) you should look/edit janita.ini so you see:
key60=27|0|<ESC>
(The key60 is just the next key in sequence the '60' may be another number)
Janita can link to either Native applications e.g. Pages, Numbers etc. or if you have Microsoft office for Mac installed you can use Excel and Word.
