How Do I .... Change where the terminal is located?

This one seems to come up fairly frequently.

First off check out the 'Frequently Asked Questions' section of the manual - this one is based on the more general one:

How do I alter the Premvet Terminal Settings

Many of the utilities have the option to display the 'location' of the terminal - if it is not set it defaults to the tty number. So you will see:

'Record in use by tty001' rather than 'Record in use by Cons 1'

or in the waiting room summaries

   Being seen:
'Mr Jones by ABC in tty1a02' rather than 'Mr Jones by ABC in Cons2'

Adding a location to the terminals makes it easier to see where people are and what they are doing.

So how do you change it:

The 1st thing to do is work out where the terminal is located, at the main menu type a ? the screen will show

User name : PVS (PVS) Data files : /v/vetdata
Device : /dev/tty07 Clinical :
Date : 05.02.2001 Management :
Version : 2.19.03 Misc files :
Features : 100.0 % Free memory : 3345.3 Kbs
User level: 100.0 % Location : Main Console

Look for the 'Device:' entry this is the physical tty number for the device. Check the 'Location:' entry this is where the systems thinks you are located, if it is blank no-one has set up a location.

Note, if the device name is /dev/ttyp something this would suggest you are using a fast network device (Axel, PC etc.) in this case look at the location - this will contain what the O.S. knows the terminal by, e.g. 192.168.1.10, axel1, pc2 etc. In this case when you are asked for a device in the next section enter that and NOT the ttyp number.

Next go to:

Main Menu -> General Apps -> Hardware -> Device Settings

Select the 'Add/Modify' option if you are changing a terminal other than the one you are on, otherwise, select 'Modify This Terminal'.

Type in the tty number as shown by the Device entry on the main menu. The system will display all the current settings for this terminal.

Select option 6 (Location) and enter name you wish to know the location by.

That's it - log the screen out and back in check with a ? at the menu, the new location should be shown.

Advanced Settings

If the system has allocated a location to a network device (ttyp) it may not be obvious which entry to use - the simple way to check is make a note of the tty number, shell out (use F6) and type who -x look for the tty number and the O.S. name is in the last column of that line.

Sometimes it is quicker and easier just to edit a file by hand. In this case - Shell out the vet system with F6, and type 'ste location' - look for the device on the left - add the location on the right.
