Managing Anti-Virus

Overview.

The optional anti-virus services available with the EnServe protect your network from viruses by scanning the attachments of all incoming e-mail for viruses and periodically scanning its shared folders for files containing viruses.

Scanning Shared Folders.

The EnServe will periodically scan the shared folders on its hard drive for viruses. It cannot scan individual computers on your network though. For that you should buy a reputable anti-virus solution for each computer on your network. Although the option for hourly virus scans is available it is not recommended. Scanning hard-drives for viruses depends on the amount of data that is stored on the hard drive and can take a long time. The EnServe box will scan all shared folders and common areas once a week automatically and a report sent to the 'Security' alias.

You can change the folders that are periodically scanned with the admin login

->
->

Enter the folders to be scanned, one per line, the default will be:
    /w/common
    /u/home

Scanning Incoming E-Mail.

The EnServe will scan all incoming e-mail for attachments containing viruses. If it finds a virus it copies the mail message to a special folder.

Manually Scanning a folder or disk.

You can use the admin login to scan either the whole disk or specific folders.

Use the Administration Menu -> Followed by Scan for Viruses

You will then have a choice: (Select with the SPACEBAR).

Whole hard disk
This is slightly different to the weekly scan, this option will scan EVERYTHING on the hard disk.
Users Home Directories
The scan will be limited to the users home directories. (/h/home)
Users Mailboxes
Only scan incomming mail folders - use this option with caution - if a virus is detected the WHOLE of the users mailbox will be quarentined. You will not need to use this option on a regular basis - all mail will be scanned on arrival automatically. (/usr/spool/mail)
WebServer Documents
Scan just the web server documents (/u/www)
Other Location
This option will allow you to navigate to any location on the server and scan just that location.
Windows Common Area
The primary Windows SMB share (/w/common)

E-Mail Reports.

If the EnServe finds a virus and cannot remove it from the file it is hiding in it quarantines the infected file and sends an e-mail report to the recipient and the 'root' users. This can be changed by altered the 'VirusAlert' mail aliases.

Up-dating Definition Files

You should periodically update any anti-virus definition files.

There is an option on the admin menu

which will automatically connect to NAI and expand up the current set of definition files. This should be one of the Scheduled Jobs on your system.
