How To... |
The Internet Junkbuster Proxy TM is privacy-enhancing software that can be run on your PC or by your ISP or company. It blocks requests for URLs (typically banner ads) that match its blockfile. It also deletes unauthorized cookies and other unwanted identifying header information that is exchanged between web servers and browsers. These headers are not normally accessible to users (even though they may contain information that's important to your privacy), but with the Internet Junkbuster you can see almost anything you want and control everything you're likely to need.

This will give you a choice of the files to edit:
The configuration files you can change are:
junkbuster.conf | The main JunkBuster configuration file. |
|---|---|
block.conf | A list of the adverts you want to block. It is easier to download one of the exisiting block files (See further reading at the bottom of this guide.) as they can be a little complicted. |
forward.conf |
Normally the only change needed will be where to forward all the
requests to. By default this will be * server:3128
to forward to your local squid server - if you are running another Web Proxy
on the network you may want to forward to that.

cookies.conf | The default options for Cookies is to allow outgoing cookies only. If there are some sites where you must allow cookies in/out then they are added here. See bottom of guide for details. |
Once your browser is told to use a proxy such as the Internet Junkbuster, it thinks of it as its server for everything, so this message means it can't talk to the proxy. The Internet Junkbuster may not be running, or you may have specified its proxy address (Enserve will look on port 8000) incorrectly. Check that the details you entered are correct. If you have telnet you can try connecting to the appropriate port to see if the Internet Junkbuster is running.
Pick a page from somewhere (such as your bookmarks, or just one that
your browser was pointing to) and Reload it. If you get a message along
the lines of ``server not responding, using cached copy instead,'' see
the advice above.
If the page reloads OK, check that your
browser is actually talking to the proxy by going to
