Important Concepts - Shared Folders |
|
OverviewThe Simple Message Block Protocol (SMB) which is also known as the LanManager protocol is essentially a set of rules that allow computers to access folders and files (and printers) on other computers on the local network as if they were on the computer accessing them. Most operating systems have the ability to use the SMB protocol to share resources although some may need additional software to do this. For example, Windows versions from 95 up all support SMB out-the-box while Linux genrally uses the Samba software suite and SCO Openserver uses the Vision or Samba suites. A comprehensive description of the workings of the SMB protocol and File and Printer Sharing is beyond the scope of this document.
Shared Folders On The EnServeOther than deciding which people and groups should have shared folders available on the EnServe there is not much configuration required to enable file and printer sharing on your network. |
