Many web sites also sell lists of their users e-mail addresses to the spammers either directly or indirectly.

Although laws are being passed to combat spam they are pretty ineffective and almost impossible to enforce. The best way to avoid spam is through common sense, an understanding of e-mail and technology.

You can help cut down the amount of spam you receive dramatically by following the following guidelines.

1. Don't distribute your e-mail address. Except to people who need it, obviously.
2. Don't put your e-mail address on web sites. Spammers collect addresses from web sites.
3. Never buy anything you found out about through spam. It just encourages the spammers.
4. Don't reply to spam. This just shows the spammers they have found a working address.
5. Use a spam filter. This software looks for spam in your mailbox and deals with it in a way you define.
