Important Concepts - Intranet Services

Overview.

The term Intranet usually refers to a companies internal web sites.
An Intranet is not generally publicly available, it is a resource for specific people using a specific network or in a specific place.

Many companies use an internal web site as a central location to provide information, news and other resources such as software used throughout the company. Often people are allowed home pages on the Intranet where they may place files or web pages they want to share with other people using the Intranet.

The Intranet is browsed like any other web site.

The EnServe Intranet.

The EnServe provides a web server that allows you to build a simple Intranet by copying files into specific shared folders on the EnServe.
The EnServe administrator can edit the Intranet's general pages while only members of specific groups can edit the pages on that groups part of the Intranet and only specific users can edit files in their own home directories on the Intranet. For both groups and people public (freely viewable) and private (password protected) areas are available on the Intranet.
