Important Concepts - Shared Folders |
|
OverviewThe Simple Message Block Protocol (SMB) which is also known as the LanManager protocol is essentially a set of rules that allow computers to access folders and files (and printers) on other computers on the local network as if they were on the computer accessing them. Most operating systems have the ability to use the SMB protocol to share resources although some may need additional software to do this. For example, Windows versions from 95 up all have support for SMB built in while Linux generally uses the Samba software suite and SCO Openserver uses the Vision or Samba suites. A comprehensive description of the workings of the SMB protocol and File and Printer Sharing is beyond the scope of this document.
Shared Folders On The EnServeThe EnServe can provide shared folders for people and groups using your network. The main benifits of having people save their data to the shared folders on the EnServe are that these files can be backed-up and scanned for viruses by the EnServe automatically. It also means that the person can access their data from any computer on your network. |
