Intranet Services

The EnServe Intranet provides an easy-to-use method for sharing information within your organisation.

The EnServe Intranet is basically a web site for your network, you view and navigate it just like any other web site.
It is not accessable from the Internet, only from your local network.

Browsing the Intranet.

You simply enter the Intranet address you require in any web browser. See below for a list of the default adresses set up on the EnServe.

Adding web-pages and other files to the Intranet.

Web-pages or other files that are placed in certain special folders inside a person or group's shared folder automatically appear on the Intranet.

Any type of file can be placed in these special folders but to be viewed as a web-page they need to be HyperText Markup Language (HTML) files with the extension .htm or .html (see notes below).

Only the EnServe Administrator can add web-pages and other files to the main Intranet area.
Each person with a shared folder on the EnServe can add their own web-pages and other files to their personal Intranet area.
Members of a group with a shared folder on the EnServe can add web-pages and other files to the group's Intranet areas.

In a group or person's shared folder on the EnServe is a folder called public_html.
Files placed in this folder will be available to anyone who can access the Intranet.

Default Intranet Addresses.

In the table below the UPPER-CASE words should be replaced with appropriate values. LAN is your network name.
nb. the little line in front of usernames is a tilde ( ~ ) not a hyphen ( - ). The tilde is usually found by hitting shift and #.
Intranet Address    Shared Folder Path    Description
http://intranet.LAN    /u/www    Main Intranet homepage.
http://intranet.LAN/~USERNAME    /u/home/USERNAME/public_html    A specific user's Intranet homepage.

Notes

If a file called index.html or index.htm is placed in an Intranet folder that page will be displayed rather then a listing of the folder's contents.

Information on creating HTML web-page files is well beyond the scope of this document.
A good place to start to learn about creating web-pages is www.htmlhelp.com.

If the EnServe is not providing DNS name resolution for your computer you can still access the Intranet by replacing intranet.LAN in the table above with the IP address of the EnServe. Your EnServe Administrator should know the IP address of the EnServe.
