In the first two sections of the manual we've learnt how you can use Premvet 5 to manage
information about your clients and their animals, make a record of the work you have
carried out for them and charge them appropriately. During the section on Adding Clinical
Work, we also introduced the concept of Automatic Pricing - where you can enter codes
for common clinical procedures and let Premvet 5 work out the cost of the work, associated
drugs and amend your stock records appropriately. Automatic Pricing is just part of the
functionality Premvet 5 provides for stock control within your practice. You'll learn how to
define Automatic Pricing codes in the next chapter, but here we will introduce you to
the full range of Premvet 5's stock control capabilities.
If you've already read the first two sections of this manual you should find the
method Premvet 5 employs to manage stock quite intuitive - because the procedures share
similarities with, say, the management record card. Each stock item on your system has its
own record card. When each card is displayed you will find summary details of the item concerned,
such as the product name, supplier and manufacturer names and unit costs, etc.
Additional screens attached to the main record card hold further details. One screen, for example,
displays information about the quantities the item is normally dispensed in (different bottle sizes, etc.)
and how each different quantity is priced. Another allows you to edit the information
that will appear on associated drug labels; and so on.
We will start the chapter with a detailed look at the stock item record card and its
related screens. You will learn how to enter new stock items, what information can be stored
and how Premvet 5 keeps an eye on your stock - automatically warning you when reserves of important
items are low and need to be re-ordered. You will also see how reports on the current state
of your stock are easily generated.
