Henston Vade Mecum

Henston Vade Mecum

This is a computerised version of The Henston Small Animal Vade Mecum containing the same information but in a form that can be displayed on the screen. This enables the veterinary surgeon to quickly access information without having to hunt for the paper version.

The menu options we hope are self-explanatory and we have included these notes to help you find your way around.

NOTE: Pressing the <ESCAPE> key will always take you back one step.

The Vade Mecum is located on the 'Help/Henston' option on the main menu, the options are:

Breeds of dogs

You enter the breed required and the screen will show the average height & weight, colours, class and any inherited diseases.

Inherited diseases in dogs

This option enables you to specify the inherited disease and the screen will list all breeds in which it occurs. You can, if required enter multiple diseases and thus list the breeds that have ALL the inherited diseases specified.

Disease/Conditions

This is one of the main features of the program and incorporates section I of the Vade Mecum. Type in the disease or condition you require and the screen will display the following details:

  1. Aetiology
  2. Differential diagnosis and presenting signs
  3. Products used in treatment
  4. Diagnostic tests
  5. Other minor categories e.g. dietary, incubation period etc.

If there are related subjects you can move to those at will, returning to the initial subject.

If any of the screens suggest products that can be used, you can access the product information directly. See section 5) for details of the tables screens.

Cross reference

This option allows you to scan either the differential diagnosis OR the signs sections for symptoms. When selected you are asked which section you want to scan, you are then asked to enter the sign (or differential diagnosis) required.

The text you enter will be compared with the possible phrases and a selection box will appear on the right of the screen enabling you to select as required.

This selection can be repeated as required up to 10 times.

Once you have entered the required details the selection box will contain a list of all diseases that match the criteria entered. From this box you can examine the diseases in more detail.

Note: If multiple entries are used they will match only the conditions where ALL etiries are found.

Tables

This is section II of the Vade Mecum. When selected, the screen will display the 40 or so tables and you can select as required.

If the table selected contains sub headings, you will be given a list of those. Once selected, the selection box will contain the drugs available under that category. A specific drug can be examined by highlighting it and pressing <RETURN>.

You can scroll through the drugs with the options 'N'ext and 'Back'. The 'G'oto option will redisplay the selection box allowing you to select a new item.

Product search

The product search option enables you to quickly find a specific product and display the appropriate data.
