Cross Updating

Cross Updating Release Notes Doc Center FAQ's Manual

Introduction and Table of Contents

The cross updating module is used to transfer clinical work and other data between two or more machines running Unix. This module is an optional extra available at additional cost for use with the Premvet 5 veterinary practice management software.

Information is transferred simply between sites using the built-in communication utilities supplied with Unix. This guide assumes that uucp is set-up and working on all sites that will be involved. There is no point in setting up Premvet 5 to update if you cannot successfully send mail messages between sites.

It is a prerequisite of cross updating that at least the main site has a direct dial in/dial out phone line dedicated to the modem. This guide will assume that both sites have dial in/out capabilities.

The use of cross updating should be transparent to the users. This guide is aimed at the System manager and will give all the necessary information for setting up and administering the systems. Cross updating involves not just the Premvet 5 software, it also covers Unix communications, remote logins and shell scripts. The person responsible for administration should be aware there is a lot to learn and understand.
